GEOLOGY OF THE AREA AROUND .. WADI ABU AQARIB, CENTRAL EASTERN DESERT, EGYPT

Ahmed Mohamed Youssef;

Abstract

The Precambrian rocks at Wadi Abu Aqarib area represent part of two faulted blocks intervened by and tlanked on the northeast by the Phanerozoic sediments. They are represented by a thick volcaniclastic succession intruded by the calcalkaline Urn El-Qi.!boor granodiorite, gabbros and alkaline granites. The volcaniClastic rocks were dissected by two stages of high angle normal faulting or rather hemigrabens (D1 and D2) filled by thick
. -... successions. of the Hammamat sediments. The first phase
of faultiqg (D1) trends NE-SW and was accompanied by
•the accumulation of the Abu Shiqieli Hammamat
sediments. The second one of faulting (D2) trends NW-SE
. - and was accompanied by the deposition of the other
occurrences of the Aqarib and Wassif Hammamat sediments. The volcaniclastics and the associated Hammamat sediments •were then intruded in the anorogenic phase by te alkali felsite dykes and lenses.
