Abstract

This investigation was carried out at Rice Research and Training Center, Kafr El-Sheikh, Egypt and Genetics Dept., Fac. of Agric., Kafr El-Sheikh, Tania Univ ., during the successive seasons from 1997 to 2000, and aimed to :
1- Select and evaluate the best medium could be used in anther culture technique for callus induction and plant regeneration.
2- Utilize anther culture technique for producing near isogenic resistant lines to blast disease for releasing multiline resistant rice varieties.

Ten local• and introduced rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties were used in this study. Eight of thelJl were donors for blast resistance genes. These varieties were Pi No. 4, BL 1 , Zenith, Dular, K3, K 59, Akiyutaka and Fukuhikari. All of them were introduced varieties with different blast resistant genes. The two recurrent genotypes were the Egyptian rice varieties, Giza 159 and Reiho. The main results presented in three major sections.
