VALUE OF ULTRASONOGRAPHY, IN llliNAL DISEASES
MOHAMED ABO EL MOHSEN MOHAMED;
Abstract
The arm of this work was to present an over view evaluation of the role of ultrasonography in all cases of kidney pathology
and malfunctions, expanding upon its advantages, accuracy, limitations
and pitfalls. To fulfill this aim, we started by giving an introductory note on the anatomy of the kidney, and tbe main pathological conditions that might lead to a mal-functioning kidney. Technique for ultrasonographic examination of the kidney has been outlined.
The work consisted of 531 patients that were known, suspicious or discovered to• have impaired kidney function, either unilaterally or bilaterally. The selection of the patients were based upon either:
I) Laboratory investigations.
2) Results of functional diagnostic modality either IVP or radionuclide scanning,....or others.
At the end of our work we can say that the ultrasonography can be used very successfully in follow up of reflux scarring processes and close monitoring to the kidney affection. In folow up of post-surgical residual dilatation (27 cases), and border line obstruction of the pelvicalyceal system (19 cases). We follow 4 children to detect the rate of renal growth after acute pyeloriiphritis, the rate was normal in 3 patients who continued low dose, long term anti-microbial prophylactic treatment in this condition, while the less compliant child shows retardation of renal growth and the presence of cortical scarring.
The diagnosis of renal tumours by sonography was excellent with high sinsitivety (96 %), and specificity (91 %).
