EPIDEMIOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF NEOPLASTIC DISEASES IN CHILDREN

Abeer Abdul Moniem Ahmed;

Abstract

The epidemiological features of cancer among children have stimulated abundant descriptive and analytic investigations. The descriptive work has demonstrated consistent differences in the incidence rates of these cancers by various factors, which include age, race, sex, season, social class and many others.

It is clear that the various forms of cancer during childhood have distinctive patterns. of occurrence. To a large extent, the characteristic population distributions of these diseases may represent differences in the underlying etiologic processes.

The most common malignancy in childhood is leukemia, which accounts for almost one third of all cases. Malignant neoplasms of the brain and other parts of the nervous system are the next most common malignancies of children accounting for about one fifth of all cases. Lymphomas are the third leading form of cancer among young persons, accounting for over 12 percent of all malignancies. Wilm's tumor, retinoblastoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, hepatic, gonadal and germ cell tumors are other cancers of children.

International comparisons of cancer incidence are potentially fraught with bias from differential access to medical care, variability in diagnostic .classifications and uncertainties in the size of the source population.

Incidence of childhood cancer by age shows that there is high incidence of childhood cancers collectively at the age group of 0 - 4 years old, and the curve of incidence rate by age decreased in the age group of 5-9 years then it rises again to reach a high level of incidence rate at age group of 10-14 years.
