EXTERNAL FIXATOR IN BONE LENGTHENING

Abstract

Limb length inequality is a common problem in children and adolescents. The causes of limb length inequality include those that cause difference in length but not in growth rate, those that cause difference in growth rate but not in length, and those that do both . The degree of actual or projected discrepancy at skeletal maturity usually determines the proper orthopaedic management. Limb lengthening has traditionally been indicated for projected or actual discrepancies equal to or exceeding Scm . Bone lengthening is a surgical method which requires meticulous technique, continuos attention ,and satisfactory cooperation on the part of the patient. Lengthening is a laborious technique which requires great care ,and should only be undertaken at the patient request. Difficult social and family situation can arise ,often because ofthe length of time necessary for this procedure. Bone lengthening can occasionally cause psychological problems requiring psychotherapy . External fixators of various designs have been used successfully for bone lengthening.
