AN INVESTIGATION ABOUT THE EFFECT OF SOME TEMPORARY RESTORATIVES ON THE SHEAR BOND STRENGTH OF COMPOSITE TO DENTIN

Abstract

Tlus study was perfonned to investigate the effect of using temporary materials on the shear bond strength of resin composite to dentin. Materials used were either eugenol containing or eugenol free .They were left for a period of one or two weeks prior to cleaning using .either a carver or pumice . They were bonded using an acetone - based adhesive system or a water - based one. A total of 260 freshly extracted sound human molar teeth were

selected for this study. 256 were used for shear bond strength testing and 4 were used for EDS analysis. Each tooth was horizontally embedded into a mould using self curing acrylic resin with their buccal surfaces free. The buccal surfaces were ground using a milling machine to expose dentin. They were divided into four groups of 64 specimens each , according to the temporary material used. Group M1, M2, M3 and M4 represented the control group, application of ZOE of P/L ratio 2:1, application of ZOE at P/L ratio of 10:1 and application of an eugenol-free temporary material respectively. They were then divided into two subgroups of 32 specimens each according to the storage periodTl for one week and T2 for two weeks. After that, the temporary materials were removed and they were divided into two divisions of 16 specimens according to the use of pumice to clean the surface or notC1 was cleaned using a carver and C2 was cleaned using pum1ce. Finally, the teeth were divided into two subdivisions according to the adhesive resin used. AI were bonded using Prime & Bond2.1 and A2 were bonded using Syntac SC. Resin composite was then applied, cured and stored for 24 hours till tested. Shear bond strength testing was done using a LLOYD testing machine and results were tabulated and statistically analyzed. EDS was also performed for certain specimens (to substantiate the shear bond strength results).
