Relationship between metabolic syndrome and serum oxytocin in patients over 55 years old

Mary Yousry Mahrous;

Abstract

 The harmonized definition of MetS requiring the presence of at least three abnormal findings among the five criteria: elevated fasting glucose (100 mg/dL) or anti-diabetic treatment, elevated blood pressure (systolic 130 mmHg and/or diastolic 85 mmHg) or anti-hypertensive treatment, reduced HDL-cholesterol (<40 mg/dL), elevated triglycerides (150 mg/d/L) or lipid-lowering treatment, and elevated waist circumference (102 cm).
 Hypertension as a silent killer, obesity and hyperlipidemia with its entire burden on the cardiovascular system and diabetes mellitus and its complications are the components of metabolic syndrome.
 It was found that there is a great association between the serum level of OT and MetS in both men and women with higher levels in men.
 High OT levels seem to be secondary to the metabolic abnormalities of MetS and reflect self-limiting mechanisms.
 Recent researches are aiming at using OT or its analogs as a treatment for obesity and MetS as it has an effect on caloric intake, obesity and blood pressure.
