Relationship between metabolic syndrome and serum oxytocin in patients over 55 years old
Mary Yousry Mahrous;
Abstract
The harmonized definition of MetS requiring the presence of at least three abnormal findings among the five criteria: elevated fasting glucose (100 mg/dL) or anti-diabetic treatment, elevated blood pressure (systolic 130 mmHg and/or diastolic 85 mmHg) or anti-hypertensive treatment, reduced HDL-cholesterol (<40 mg/dL), elevated triglycerides (150 mg/d/L) or lipid-lowering treatment, and elevated waist circumference (102 cm).
Hypertension as a silent killer, obesity and hyperlipidemia with its entire burden on the cardiovascular system and diabetes mellitus and its complications are the components of metabolic syndrome.
It was found that there is a great association between the serum level of OT and MetS in both men and women with higher levels in men.
High OT levels seem to be secondary to the metabolic abnormalities of MetS and reflect self-limiting mechanisms.
Recent researches are aiming at using OT or its analogs as a treatment for obesity and MetS as it has an effect on caloric intake, obesity and blood pressure.
