STUDY OF EPILEPTIC SEIZURES FOLLOWING HEAD TRAUMA

Abstract


This work was carried out to study the prevalence of seizures caused by head injury among the epileptic population, and to study the vanous contributing factors responsible for the development of such seizures.



We studied 101 patients aged 10-65 years, 44 females and 57 males. 1

These patients were classified according to the severity of their trauma into 3 groups.
I. Mild (loss of consciousness or amnesia less than 30 minutes).

2. Moderate (loss of consciousness or amnesia for 30 minutes to 24 hours or a skull fracture).
3. Severe (loss of consciousness or amnesia more than 24 hours, subdural hematoma, or brain contusion).
All patients were subjected to complete history taking including full details of any head trauma events, the time lapse, the type of seizure, the frequency, the I
type of medication received. The details of the seizures were obtained from i
the patients and verified by close relatives and or observers of the attacks, I
thorough general and neurological examination, routine investigations, plain i

X-ray skull, electroencephalogram, CT and MRl if needed.
