Efficiency of Different Retreatment Methods in the Removal of MTA-FILLAPEX

Abstract
This study evaluated different methods of retreatment of MTA-FILLAPEX sealer with two different rotary retreatmentkits;Protaper retreatment files & R-Endo retreatment files, solvent, and passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) as final step in retreatment.
In this study, time taken for retreatment and amount of remnant filling material were evaluated.
From the results of this study the following were concluded:
1) Protaper retreatment kit significantly took less time for retreatment than R-Endo retreatment kit.But, both left the same amount of filling material.
2) Solvent enhanced the penetration of both retreatment kits until reaching the working length, and thus it decreased the total time of retreatment. But, itincreased the remnant filling material in the root canals.
3) PUI increased the time for removal of filling material. But,itsignificantly decreased the amount of filling material in the apical third.
Recommendations:
1) Increase the size of preparation after completion of retreatment.
2) Further studies to compare different ultrasonic tips used in retreatment.
3) Solvent should only be used when there is difficulty to penetrate into the filling material.
