Nosocomial Infection in the NICU of Obstetrics & Gynecology Hospital, Ain Shams University, an Update

Abstract

The aim of the study was to determine the incidence and risk factors of nosocomial infection in NICU of Obstetrics and Gynecology hospital, Ain Shams University. The present study was carried out on 170 neonates admitted to the NICU of Obstetrics and Gynecology hospital, Ain Shams University between 1/1/2012 to 31/12/2012. The inclusion criteria were: (1) stay in the NICU for more than 48 hours, (2) negative blood culture in the first 48 hours of admission. Neonates with history of premature rupture of membrane (PROM) more than 18 hours, those with neonatal sepsis on admission (according to sepsis score or with positive blood culture); and those with positive C-reactive protein within 1st 48 hours of admission were excluded from the study. The incidence of nosocomial infection in the present study was 56.5%, klebsiella was the most common organism responsible for nosocomial infection, and the mortality rate among nosocomially infected infants was 31.25%. The risk factors for were low birth weight, low gestational age, presence of central vascular line, presence of congenital anomaly(ies), surgical procedures, TPN, mechanical ventilation, prolonged NICU stay, number of antibiotics used, endotracheal intubation during resuscitation after delivery, delivery via CS, presence of peripheral vascular line or oro/narogastric tube.Summary
