Abstract

Portal hypertension is one of the most complications of chronic liver disease. It is manifested clinically by ascites, splenonegaly, variceal bleeding or portosystemic encephalopathy. Variceal bleeding is the most common cause of morbidity and mortality in portal hypertensive patients.

Ascites is the most common complication of patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Its development constitutes the most important manifestation of the disease and is an indication of liver transplantation. Also, it is considered as a risk factor of bleeding.

Therapeutic paracentesis with intra venous albumin infusion is a safe procedure for treatment of cirrhotic patients with tense ascites.

The aim of this work is to study the effect of repeated large volume paracentesis on the p011al hemodynamics and risk of bleeding in patients with mixed liver cirrhosis and tense ascites.

This study was carried on twenty patients with mixed liver cirrhosis and tense ascites divided into tow group: Group I included I 0 patients without history of gastrointestinal bleeding and group II included I 0 patients with history of gastrointestinal bleeding.
