MANAGEMENT OF CARCINOMA OF THE OESOPHAGUS IN ASSIUT UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

Abstract
This work is a retrospective and prospective study . It was conducted on 318 patients with proved cancer oesophagus. Patients were admitted at Cardia-Thoracic and General Surgery Department through January 1992 to the end of December 2001. Diagnosis was established in all cases by Oesophagoscopy and biopsy, barium swallow and abdominal sonar. Bronchoscopy was done in all cases except with tumour of the lower 113 and gastro-oesophageal junction.
• Frequency: -
Though the first three years; frequency of admitted cases was 25 per year, while in the last seven years; the frequency was increased to 35 per year.
• Distribution: -
Assiut governate had the highest percentage of referred cases (35%) followed _by Qena (26%), Sohag (19%), Minia (9%), Aswan (6o/o) and El Wady (?Yo).
