TURAM ELECTROMAGNETIC INVESTIGATION ON SOME MINERAL OCCURRENCES OF SAINT KATHERINE AREA, SOUTH SINAI.

MOHAMED AHMED AHMED RASHED;

Abstract

The Umm Qeisum area lies to the north 'east of Katherina pluton/ in the central part of the high mountainous region of south Sinai peninsula/ Egypt. It is bounded by latitudes 28° 33' &

280

35 north and long1. tudes 34 00'

& 340

02. It covers an area of

about 12 Km .

The area occupies the north western corner of a quartz monzonite pluton. Five alteration zones have been reported in the area which are sericitization/ chloritization/ propylitization 1
silicification and ferrugination.

Structurally

two sets of faults were recorded in the area

from the aerial photographs. The first set forms a group of long/ parallel fault planes trending parallel to the Gulf of Aqaba (i.e. NNE-SSW & NE-SW ).Whereas/ the other is parallel to the Gulf of
Suez (i.e. WNW-ESE ).

The possibility of mineralization in Umm Qeisum area attracted the attention of several investigators. Most of their studies were concentrated on the sulfide mineralization by studying the relationship between the structure of the area and the alteration processes affecting the quartz monzonite rocks and
the mode of occurrence of these sulfide minerals. Disseminations

of pyrite

chalcopyrite and sphalerite were discovered in the

quartz monzonite rock.
