COMPARISON BETWEEN COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY AND ULTR ASONOSRAPHY IN THE DIAGNOSIS OF APPENDICITIS
Hazem Ahmed El-Shawadfy;
Abstract
This study was carried out on 49 patients with suspected appendicitis
(lO females and 19 males).
All these patients were categorized into two groups:
Group 1 included 38 patients presented with acute or chronic appendicitis.
Group 2 included 11 patients presented with appendicular abscesses or masses.
All these patients \vere examined by pelviabdominal ultrasonography and computed· tomot,'Taphy in the radiology department of Suez Canal University Hospital
The aim of this was to compare sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of ultrasonography and computed tomography in the diagnosis of
appendicitis.
Our study revealed that computed tomography is more sensitive, specific and accurate than ultrasound in the diagnosis of appendicitis, also computed tomography is more sensitive and accurate than ultrasonography in the diagnosis of appendicular abscesses or masses.
The principal advantages of US are its lower cost; lack of ionising radiation; provide dynamic infonnation through graded compression, and delineate gynecologic disease which 1s a common mimic of acute
appendicitis.
The principal advantages of CT include less operator dependency than US, as reflected by a higher diagnostic accuracy in most published
