Tarek Ali Abdellah Mohamed;

Abstract

Background: Globally more than 1 million people suffer from colorectal cancer (CRC) per annum, resulting in about 0.5 million deaths. The role of estrogen in CRC is being researched with great interest; expression of estrogen receptors (Alfa and beta) is being explored.
Aims and Objective: Our objective was to compare the serum estradiol levels in diagnosed male patients of CRC, with age-matched controls; and to study the estradiol levels across the different stages of CRC.
Methods:This case control study includes 80 subjects; the patients were recruited from GIT department, Ain Shams University Hospital between August 2015 and August 2016, and divided into 2 groups:
• Group (A):40 controls.
• Group (B):40 colorectal cancer patients.
Each patient subjected to full history and clinical examination and laboratory investigation with ultrasound and CT pelvi- abdomen and serum estradiol level.
Result: The serum estradiol level among CRC patients was significantly more than that among controls (p<0.000). Significant difference was obtained between Stages 1 and 2 and between stage 2 and 4.
Conclusion: our study revealed increased serum estradiol among male CRC patients.
Key words: CRC, S. estradiol.
