Abstract

In this work, the infection rate of Post- operative urinary tract and surgical wound infections were evaluated Also, the possible aetiological factors were searched for. This study aims to identify the role of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella Pneumoniae in • nosocomial infections.

This study was conducted over a period of one year starting from April 1995 to July 1996 on patients selected from the urology department of Theodor Bilharz institute. The overall number of patients selected for this study was 238 (179 males and 59 females), on a wide range of age varied from 2 to 82 years.

All this cases were examined and noted for other medical conditions e.g. diabetes mellitus, bilharzia, cancer, eldery, duration of pre-operative hospital stay. samples of urine and surgical wound were taken from the patients in sterile test tubes and were cultured on different cultural and specific media. Incubation was carried out at 37°C for 24-48 hours under aerobic conditions.

Any growth was identified by examination of gram stain, capsule stain and biochemical reactions. Also samples were taken from hospital as a control source of infection and was examined as be mentioned before. Total urine count was carried out to differentiate contamination from a true urinary tract pathogens.

Nosocomial urinary tract infection constitutes 35.7% of all cases, while nosocomial . surgical wound infection was 15.6% only of studied cases. The highest incidence of infection was detected in patients ranged from (61-82) years old, while the least was detected in (31-45) years old patients. Females appear to be more susceptible to infection than males. This study was carried out on immuno compromised patients. Cancer was considered the most efficient debilitating factor in nosocomial infection, while renal insufficiency was detected as the lowest one. Also surgical procedure types plays an important role in nosocomial infection, use of bowel in surgery
