Abstract

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) IS a serious neuropsychiatric

complication of liver diseases. The precise mechanisms responsible for HE are still not fully understood. However, it is unlikely that a single mechanism underlies the whole syndrome of HE, thus a multifactorial pathogenesis is much more likely. The primary candidate in the pathogenesis of this syndrome is hyperammonemia. In addition, previous studies showed that multiple neurotransmitter systems failure and oxidative imbalance occur in the brain in HE.
