ASSESSMENT OF SOCIAL FUNCTIONING AND SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR OF SCHIZOPHRENIC PATIENTS: A STEP TOWARDS COMMUNITY REINTEGRATION

Abstract
The deinstitutionalization move has been adopted by the Western Countries after the 2"d world war. This policy has been the resultant of three major factors which are cost saving, benefit of the long-stay inpatients and bad reputation of the institutions at that time.
Deinstitutionalization meant the change of the center of psychiatric care from being hospital based to being community based. This was achieved by supporting the mentally ill patients in the community.
Community Mental Health System was implemented in order to achieve this goal and it provides inpatient services, partial hospitalization, a wide range of outpatient services including medication monitoring, case management, psychiatric rehabilitation, accommodation and vocational rehabilitation.
Psychiatric rehabilitation is considered a corner stone of community care, and it serves a major role in maintaining the patient in the available community resources.
In the developed countries there has been a great reduction of psychiatric hospital beds. Many of the public mental hospitals are closed and inpatients beds are saved for the acute cases and the severely disabled and many of these beds are located in psychiatry departments in general hospitals.
For long, deinstitutionalization has been subjected to criticism and it is accused to have resulted, due to failure to trace the patients in the community which resulted in adverse events like homelessness, criminality, and increased suicide rate without being truely effective in reintegrating patients into the community or improving the degree of psychopathology and disability in them. However, it is argued that it has been effective in improving the quality of life of
