EVALUATION AND ENHANCING THE PUNCHING SHEAR RESISTANCE OF FLAT SLABS USING DIFFERENT STEEL CONFIGURATION

Abstract


Shear reinforcement (RFT) can be used to increase the strength and ductility of concrete flat plates. However to be effective, the shear reinforcement must be well anchored in the compression and tension zones of the slab. The results of tests on slab-column connection models provided with special shear reinforcement are presented in this paper. Such shear reinforcement can help in reducing the slab thickness, weight and cost of structure.
The experimental program included six flat slabs having concrete compressive strength 30MPa. The slabs were 1450*1450mm and 150mm thickness with bottom reinforcement (RFT) 10Ø18/m in both direction (high grade steel) and 5Ø10/m as an upper reinforcement (RFT) mesh (high grade steel). The slabs were divided into three types the first type had no shear R.F.T and consider control slab, the second type had shear reinforcement vertical shear studs around the loaded area, and the third type of shear reinforcement contained a horizontal mesh5Ø10/m at mid-height of specimen of the slab. First three specimens were loaded at mid span with a single concentrated load until failure and last three specimens were loaded at edge column on cantilever with eccentric load until failure.
The general deformational behaviour of the tested specimens was recorded and examined (cracking, deflections, and strain in both concrete and steel). To evaluate the results of the tested slabs, several of international code had been used to estimate the punching shear and obtained that the difference between the experimental and international code results was acceptable.

Recommendations for the analysis and execution for flat plates were obtained. A comparison between the results of this research and code equations was achieved to improve the analysis methods of flat plates.
