COMPARATIVE STUDY BETWEEN CURRENT CONTROL TECHNIQUES IN 3-PHASE POWER SHUNT ACTIVE FILTER

Hebatallah Mohamed Mahmoud Sharaf;

Abstract

With the widespread of power electronics devices and their enormous applications in industry, Harmonics have appeared be an important problem that causes the
degradation of the quality of electrical power

In this thesis, we have tried to study the phenomenon of Harmonics: its origin, modeling, drawbacks and how to overcome it. We focused mainly on the active filters as it is considered a very promising solution for harmonics mitigation. More emphasis has been made on the shunt active filter as a solution for harmonic current suppression.

An overview is given about the different components of the Shunt Active Filters, their performance and operation principles to compensate the harmonic current. Our work is interested mainly on the control circuit of the Shunt Active Filter; its components and design. A study is made about the control techniques used for extracting the reference compensating current, focusing on the techniques based on the instantaneous reactive power theory and taking the P-Q, Cross Vector, p-q-r and d-q techniques as an example
for these techniques.

Models are designed for the Shunt Active Filter using MATLAB/SIMULINK, with four different control circuits based on the four techniques mentioned previously. Simulation study has been used to verify the validity of the models for harmonic current mitigation under different source and load conditions. A comparison is carried out between the performances of the control techniques under the different conditions based on the simulation results.
