During the last decade, large effort has been put into the

computer simulation of casting processes. Models for solving the heat transfer during solidification of alloys have been successfully developed. However, the application of these models implies an accurate knowledge of various thermal param ters. A most important parameter in the case of permanent mould castipg is the heat transfer coefficient at the metal/mould interface.
