Manar Kamal Hassan;

Abstract

Ascites is most common problem in patients with cirrhosis of the liver. As it has a benign nature whereas other diseases manifested with malignant ascites.
We studied a more specific, highly sensitive marker and most available test helping us to differentiate benign and malignant ascites.
- Since, clinical and experimental evidence suggest that alternations in cholesterol metabolism may have a major role in carcinogenesis and tumour development. So, using cholesterol as a marker at ascetic fluid to evaluate the type of ascites.
- Using two groups of patients: one of benign ascites and the other with malignant one. Both groups subjected to all tests and investigation helping in diagnosis and our study showing that cholesterol level at ascitic fluid more sensitive and accurate than SAAG.
- Our results approved that ascitic cholesterol was highly increased at malignant ascites more than in benign patients.
- So, measuring cholesterol at ascitic fluid is an easy, cheap and available test to diagnose and follow up patients liable for malignancy and more helpful at remote areas deprived from medical services.
