Study of Adiponectin Level in Diabetic Adolescent Girls in Relation To Glycemic Control and Pubertal Development

Abstract

SUMMARY iabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, action or both. The chronic hyperglycemia of diabetes is associated with long term damage, dysfunction and/or failure of various organs. Adiponectin is adipose secreted protein that is produced exclusively and abundantly in adipose tissue. Adiponectin has a great metabolic effects including enhancement of of insulin sensitivity, reduction of hepatic glucose production, decreasing gluconeogenesis and renoprotective effects against the development of albuminuria in diabetic patients. Adiponectin is upregulated in type 1DM due to insulin deficiency. The aim of the present study was to determine the influence of type 1diabetes mellitus in adolescent girls on the circulating level of adiponectin and to study its relation to glycemic control. The present study is a case control study that carried out on 40 female adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus regularly attending the Pediatric Endocrinology Out-Patient Clinic, National Research Center, Cairo, Egypt.Their ages ranged between 9 and 18 years. Another age matched group of 40 healthy adolescent females were included and served as the controls group.
