Monitoring Quality of Nursing Care for Neonates in the First 24 Hours Post Extubation

Abstract


The current study aims to assess quality of nursing care provided to neonates in the first 24 hours post extubation through assess nurses’ applicability of the standards of care for neonates in the first 24 hours post extubation and assess factors hindering non applicability of the standards care for neonates in the first 24 hours post extubation. Design: A descrepative study was carried out at the Elmansoura Insurance Hospital affiliated to Ministry of Health and population and Obstetric and Gynecological Hospital affiliated to Ain- shams University Hospital. Sampling: The study involved 57 nurses and 57 neonates in the previously mentioned settings who are just extubated in the first 24 hours who were present in the time of data collection. Tools of the data collection involved.two tools were used, I: A pre-designed questionnaire to assess nurses' knowledge regarding applicability of standards care for neonates in the first 24 hours post extubation. II:Observational Checklists to assess nurses' practice regarding applicability of standards care of neonates in the first 24 hours post extubation. Result of the study revealed that, the mean age of the studied nurses’ was 24.6+3.4 years and the mean years of experiences of studied nurses’ were 5.6+3.9 years. More than half of studied nurse’s had good knowledge regarding nursing care of neonates in the first 24 hours post extubation. In addition to that; all of the studied nurse’s were competent to nursing care practice of neonates post extubation. Conclusion: the current study concluded that more than half of the studied nurses had good knowledge and all of them had competent practice regarding applicability of the standard care of neonates in the first 24 hours post extubation. Recommendations: The study recommend that, Periodical check for nurses working at NICU for the applicability of the standard care for neonates in the first 24 hours post extubation to reach the applicability.
