Nurses' Performance Regarding Management of Patients Post Liver Transplantation in Critical Care Unit

Abstract
Background: The nurse plays a vital role in caring patients post liver transplantation and decreases patients’ stay at critical care unit. The aim of this study was to assess nurses' performance regarding management of patients post liver transplantation in critical care unit at Ain Shams Specialized Hospital. Research design: A descriptive exploratory design was utilized to conduct this study. Setting: The study was conducted in critical care unit at Ain Shams Specialized Hospital at Cairo in Egypt. Sample: A purposive sample of nurses (30) in critical care unit at Ain Shams Specialized Hospital. Tools of data collection: Nurses’ knowledge assessment structured self administrated questionnaire, Nurses’ attitude assessment Likert scale and Nurses’ practice observational checklist. Results: The results of this study showed that, 100% of studied nurses had unsatisfactory total level of knowledge, 66.7% of studied subjects had unsatisfactory total level of practice while, 93.3% of them had satisfactory attitude toward patient post liver transplantation. Conclusion: The current study concluded that, the studied nurses had unsatisfactory level of knowledge and practice in spite of, most of them had positive attitude toward patients post liver transplantation. Also, there was a significant strong positive correlation between total knowledge and practice of study nurses, but there was no correlation between total knowledge and total attitude and also between total practice and total attitude. Recommendations: Implementing an educational training program to improve nurses' performance regarding caring of patients post liver transplantation.
