Abstract

This paper describes the road-tunneling project is being carried out in the historical Islamic heart of the Cairo City, Egypt. Construction of El-Azhar Road Tunnels project has been regarded as an essential part of the development of Fatimid Cairo.

This paper deals with the problem of multiple tunnels using closed face TBM with earth pressure balancing and Bentonite slurry (mix-shield TBM)with an external diameter of 9.40 m. For this purpose, the multiple tunnels of El-Azhar road tunnels are modeled in two cases. The different contour maps for stresses and displacements are analyzed for each case and the effect of excavation of one tunnel on the neighboring tunnel is also studied, the soil has an elasto-plastic behavior corresponding to Mohr-Coulomb criterion.

In-situ measurements for quality control compiled during construction of shield tunnels using this technologies were utilized to present practical evaluation and guidelines for future use of similar systems within other regions having similar geological conditions.
