Abstract


Aging in Egypt has specific problems, and the elderly like any age group have certain basic needs, the major needs of older adults are economic dependency, living conditions and medical care. The aim of this study was to determine the health problems and needs of the older adults in the rural area. The study sample consisted of 180 elders residenting in El Khossous village, Qualiobeya Governorate. Two tools were used for data collection. The first tool was an interviewing questionnaire for collecting data related to socio demographic characteristics and items related to health problems; second tool was an rating scale for assessing the older adults daily activities, sensory, social, intellectual activities and the environment. The results included the frequency and comparison of the various parameters under study. Recommendations emphasize mainly health care quality improvement and increase of the provided health services mainly at rural community.

The elderly like any age group have certain basic needs, physiological and safety needs, as well as, the need for love and belonging self-esteem, and self-actualization. Their physical, emotional and social needs are complex and interrelated. the most frequent health problems of older adults are chronic and often in progressive conditions.
