Description
Adolescence is the period of life that begins with the appearance of secondary sex characteristics and ends with cessation of growth and achievement of emotional maturity. The term comes from the Latin word “adolescere”, meaning “to grow up into maturity”. Adolescence can be thought of as involving three distinct sub-phases. The first phase is “early adolescence phase”, which is from 11 to <14 years. This is characterized primarily by the changes of puberty and responses to those changes. The second phase “middle adolescence phase”, which is from 14 to <17 years, and is characterized by transition to a dominant peer orientation, with all the stereotypical adolescent preoccupations of music, dress and appearance, language, and behavior. The third phase is “Late adolescence phase” which is from 17-20 years, this involves transition into adulthood, including taking an adult work roles and developing adult relationships
