Abstract

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to bone fragility and an increased susceptibility to fracture; it is a major public health problem. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of lifestyle modification on the severity of osteoporosis. By using a quasi- experimental study design, a sample of convenience of 40 adult osteoporotic patients with following criteria: at any age group, from both sexes and diagnosed with osteopenia and osteoporosis. The sample was selected from the Osteoporosis Unit at the Geriatric Center in Ain Shams University Hospital. Three tools were developed to collect necessary data, interviewing questionnaire format, lifestyle behavior score and third tool for physical assessment to calculate body mass index (BMI) and measuring Dual Energy X- ray Absorptiometry (DEXA). The results of study indicated that the majority of studied sample were females, aged between <20 to over 40. It also revealed that there was remarkable increase in the level of knowledge together with modifying the negative lifestyle to positive lifestyle, and improvement in DEXA scores after one year from implementation of the program. The study recommended that, future research in this area should include counseling for all population regarding universal preventive measures, periodic screening for bone mineral density and improved technologies for this measurement

Description
Osteopenia means low bone density. It is not a disease but is a marker for risk of fractures. Bone densitometry is a simple, painless test that measures bone density. If the bone density is already abnormal lifestyle changes can help slow progression of bone loss and reduce the occurrence of fractures. Certain lifestyle choices can increase a person's risk of osteoporosis. Young people with low-calcium diets are likely to have less dense bones that are susceptible to osteoporosis as they grow older. Cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption can accelerate bone loss. Furthermore, young women who exercise excessively may disrupt their body's normal estrogen production and menstrual cycles. This reduction in estrogen levels can lead to premature bone loss. Nurses can focus their teaching on primary prevention and ensure that people are eating diets that are rich in calcium, and encouraging them to engage in weight-bearing activities such as walking and weight lifting. As well, people should not smoke. The value of hormone replacement therapy in women, its benefits and possible long term side effects must be considered on the advice of the primary care providers.
