Abstract

The present study conducted to investigate the beneficial effects of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in fish oil (FO) in comparison with corn oil (CO) without and with vitamin E as antioxidant. Determination and identification of fatty acids of tested oils by GLC technique were studied. 48 male rats Sprague -Dawely weighing 120 + 5g were divided into equal 8 groups and fed for six weeks either with balanced diets contain CO or FO without and with vitamin E ( groups I-IV ) or fed with high-fat high-cholesterol diets contain CO or FO without and with vitamin E (groups V-VIII). Biochemical analyses of plasma lipid profile as total lipids (TL), total cholesterol (TC), triacylglycerols (TG), high, low and very low density lipoprotein- cholesterol ( HDL-C , LDL-C and VLDL - C ), total hepatic lipids and cholesterol as well as malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, vitamin E concentration, atherogenic index (AI) and inhibition peroxidation ratio (IPR) were determined. Finally histological examination of aorta sections was investigated. The results showed that presence of long chain fatty acids as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) [C20:5 (n-3)] and decosahexaenoic acid (DHA) [C 22:6 (n-3)] in balanced diets or atherogenic diets had a beneficial effect in reducing levels of lipids profile as TL, TC, TG, LDL-C, VLDL-C and reducing of MDA levels with increasing of HDL-C , in comparison with CO that contains 0.92% n-3 PUFAs as linolenic acid. Biochemical findings were confirmed by the results of histological examination, which illustrated that when rats were fed FO either without or with vitamin E caused an improvement in the histopathological changes which were found as a result of consuming HF-HC diets containing CO without and with vitamin E in aorta sections.
