Abstract
Novel N-[4- (4`-cyanophenoxy) phenyl] acrylamide (CPAM) has been synthesized. Its structure has been elucidated by elemental analysis, FTIR and 1H NMR as well as 13C NMR. Free radical- initiated polymerization of CPAM was carried out in THF solution using azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator. The effect of monomer and initiator concentrations and reaction temperature on the rate of polymerization (Rp) was studied. The activation energy of the polymerization was calculated (E= 21.1 kJ/mol). The polymer structure was investigated by FTIR and 1H NMR. The properties of the prepared polymer, including thermal behavior, thermal stability, solubility and solution viscosity, were also studied.
