Discourse Analysis: with Special Reference to the Birthday Party by Harold Pinter

Abdeen, Azza;

Abstract

The thesis presents a descriptive framework for analyzing spoken discourse. In this respect, some analytical devices, which belong to different linguistic theories and models, are applied to the interactive processes of a dramatic text. One of the main concerns of the thesis is to show how discourse analysis can be applied to dramatic texts in order to infer implied meanings. The analytical linguistic framework is made up of exchange structure, turn-taking procedures, the cooperative principle and terms of address.
