Abstract

This study investigated the protective and hypoglycemic effect of carob and doum drinks on the alloxan-induced diabetes in rats. Animals were allocated into four groups each of 6 rats. Two groups served as control (one normal and one pathogenic diabetic rats) and the other two groups were induced diabetes and then orally given the carob and doum drinks for four weeks.
The carob exhibited a high antioxidant activity and total phenolics content comparing to doum aqueous extracts. Also, the results revealed that, rat’s body weight gain were significantly high in the carob and doum treated groups. Furthermore, the treatment with carob and doum drinks produced a pronounced hypoglycemic effect when compared to the pathogenic diabetic group. In addition, the histopathological examination of pancreatic section in pathogenic diabetic ratsshowed severe histological changes as compared to rats treated groups with carob and doum drinks, these results reflecting the protective effect of carob and doum drinks against diabetes mellitus.
