Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is characterised by hyperglycaemia that is often
associated with long-term complications, including retinopathy, nephropathy, and
neuropathy, macro vascular and micro vascular damage. The present study was
designed to evaluate the ability of sodium orthovanadate (SOV) to ameliorate the
disturbances in some physiological parameters induced by DM in rats. Histological
studied on the pancreas were also involved. Serum glucose, glycosylated
haemoglobin HbA1c, lipid profiles and lipid peroxidation levels were significantly
elevated in diabetic rats injected with STZ, whereas, the levels of C-peptide and
liver glycogen content were significantly decreased. Some histopathological
lesions were also observed.
The administration of SOV at low doses (50 mg/kg daily) to diabetic rats
improved the previous parameters. However, this amelioration did not occur with
the high dose (100 mg/kg daily).
