Abstract

This paper concerns the investigation of problems resulting from unsteady flow in pipe systems. Unsteady flow conditions studied in the present work were created by various cases of valve closure in a pipeline system. The unsteady flow hydraulic systems were operated with and without surge relief valve. A mathematical model was modified to study the transient flow problems occurring in hydraulic pipe system that caused by the various operating conditions. Experimental work was carried out to verify the model. Finally, a parametric study was conducted to investigate the effect of surge relief valve parameters which include percentage opening, location, diameter, opening time and opening pressure on water hammer.
