Abstract


Clinical teaching methods is one of the most important parts of students' educational preparation. It prepares student nurses to use their critical thinking skills for problem solving. Clinical practice provides nursing students with opportunities to learn the basic knowledge, skills and attitudes of nursing in clinical setting. The learning environment influences the individuals' self-efficacy, for students to feel competent and confident in their abilities. Nurse educators must be good facilitators, motivators and role models for students (Chan, 2006). Aim of the study: This study aims to assess opinions of students versus teachers towards clinical teaching methods of pediatric nursing course in technical health institutes. Subject and methods:- Research design: Comparative descriptive study was used to carry out this study Research Settings: Data were collected from 4 Technical health institutes, it represents: 1. University Technical institute:- nursing technical Institute in Ain Shams university 2. Ministry of Health:- Imbaba technical Health Institute in El Giza 3. Health Insurance :-Nasr city nursing Technical Institute 4. Ministry of Interior :- El Agoza Technical nursing Institute Research Subjects The study sample included all available number of nursing students that composed of 96 students through the academic year 2011/2012 at first year at the previously mentioned settings and their teachers (20). Tools of data collection Data were collected through using of the following tools: Ι -An interview questionnaire (appendix Ι & Π):- A pre designed interviewing questionnaire format was designed and written in simple Arabic Language by the researcher after reviewing the relevant literature. It covered the following parts: Part Ι: - Characteristics of studied students (age, academic year, previous academic failure, certifications) - Characteristics of studied clinical instructors (age, settings, qualifications, experience, training programs attended) Part Π: - Opinions of clinical instructors toward clinical teaching methods of pediatric nursing courses as instructional objectives, course content, media & methods of clinical teaching, practical hours, equipment & resources in clinical areas, evaluation methods & techniques. - Opinions of students toward clinical teaching methods of pediatric nursing courses as instructional objectives, course content, media & methods of clinical teaching, practical hours, equipment & resources in clinical areas, evaluation methods & techniques. Scoring system: (3) point Likert scale was used to determine the students' opinions - As regards opinions toward educational objectives, teaching skills, evaluation methods each item scored into 3 if agree, 2 if neutral and 1 if disagree. Then according to their responses opinions were categorized into disagree (< 40), neutral (40: ≤ 60) and agree (> 60-100). - As regards assessing opinions of the studied sample towards the content each item scored into 2 if enough, 1 if not enough. Then according to their responses opinions were categorized into not enough (< 40) and enough (40 - 100). - As regards assessing opinions of the studied sample towards the clinical teaching methods, media, skill resources and evaluation technique each item scored into 2 if Yes, 1 if No. Then according to their responses opinions were categorized into No (< 40) and Yes (40 - 100). Π- Observational checklist (appendix Ш) is designed by the researcher based on the first year clinical pediatric course to assess the actual clinical training for students. Scoring system - (3) point Likert scale was used to determine the students opinion's about the procedures doing, in which (3) mean agree, (2) means neutral and (1) means disagree. Then according to their responses opinions were categorized into disagree (< 40), neutral (40: ≤ 60) and agree (> 60-100). Results of the study: The main findings of the study can be summarized as the following: - The present study showed that the mean age of studied instructor's was (30.9±3.5) years. As regards to year of experience the, two third of them (65%) have less than 5years &only quarter of them (25%) taking training course. As regards the characteristics of the studied sample studied students age group (19 < 21) years with mean (20.6±2.7), quarter (20.4%) of them previous academic failure majority (88.09%) of them reported that courses difficult English language &increasing of study subject - All studied clinical instructors (100%) agree regarding courses with educational objectives but half of studied students (52%) are agree. - Highly statistical significant between clinical instructors & students opinions toward pediatric course contents, practical & theoretical hours. - There is no statistical significant difference (>0.05) as regarding to practical methods of teaching & media used. - Approximately one third (32.7% & 24%) respectively are satisfactory knowledge regarding to laboratory, library and courses. The present study revealed that, there's highly statistical significant between clinical instructors & studied student in methods of evaluation. The majority of clinical instructor's total opinions (80%) was agree regarding to instructional objectives. - As regarding instructor's opinions toward practical places skill labs and library, the majority (90%) of them unsatisfied. - Three quarter of studied instructors (75%) were satisfied opinions regarding assessment technique. In addition in total opinions of studied student was observed among on (44.79%) were unsatisfied regarding course content, majority of them (85.42%) regarding laboratory and nearly half of them (44.79%) regarding assessment technique. Highly statically relations between students and practical pediatric nursing course (P<0.01). - There's highly statistically significant relation between place of work (institute) and practical pediatric course tools were not statistically correlated with characteristics of the students.
