Developing and verifying Guidelines for Controlling of Occupational Hazards Facing Staff Nurses

Abstract

Background: Many forces have converged to spotlight the issue of occupational hazards today. Moreover, staff nurses primary commitment is to the hospitals, well-being, and safety measures of the nurses staff across the life span and in all settings . The aim of the study was to develop guidelines for controlling occupational hazards facing staff nurses.Design:A methodological design used to carry out this study .Subjects: Two study subjects -staff nurses and jury group were included in the study.Setting: The study was conducted at Intensive care units in El Harm hospital, which affiliated to ministry of health.Tools of data collection: four tools were used for collecting data, namely, Need assessment questionnaire sheet, self-reported questionnaire regarding occupational hazards, an observation check list , andan opinionaire sheet. Result: the results showed that 52% of the studied staff nurses had unsatisfactory knowledge regarding occupational hazards pre developing guidelines , meanwhile post – developing guidelines the satisfactory of staff nurses level reached (94%) . More than three quarter of staff nurses had inadequate performance regarding occupational hazards pre – developing guidelines , meanwhile at post – developing guidelines phase all staff nurses had adequate performance . jury members agreed upon the item the proposed guidelines, while their agreement reached between 93% and 100% .conclusion:There was improvement staff nurses knowledge and performance regarding controlling of occupational hazards after implementing the guidelines .Recommendations:An orientation program for, newly appointed for staff nurses about occupational hazards have to implemented, health care organization should integrate the concept of safety in the structure of the hospital system .the developed guidelines have to be disseminated in different health care sector Key words: guidelines, occupational hazards, staff nurses .
