Practical and Theoretical Barriers Facing Male Students at Antenatal and Intra-natal Units of Ain Shams Maternity University Hospital Thesis

Abstract
All over the world, nursing is considered a feminine career.
Although, presence of males in nursing
field has been gradually
rising, they are remained a small percentage of nursing
population.
Aim
:
to
investigate the practical and theoretical barriers facing male
nursing students at Antenatal and Intra
-
natal Units in
Obstetrics and
Gynecological
Hospital of Ain Shams University.
Methods
:
A
descriptive study design was used
at Faculty of Nursing and
O
bstetrics and Gynecological
Hospital of Ain Shams University.
Sample
:
A purposive sample were used to recruit 153 male nursing
students who study obstetrics in the third year, students in fourth year
and internship.
Tools:
1)An interviewing questionnaire a
nd 2) Likert
rating scale.
Results:
Findings of the present study showed that,
half
of the study sample had low level of comfort when performing
maternity nursing procedures.
Furthermore,
all them facing Practical
and theoretical barriers during their stud
ying of maternity nursing
course.
Finally, there was a highly statistical significant difference
between
total number of barriers and academic year, mother
education level.
Conclusion
:
The entire study sample facing practical
and theoretical barriers durin
g their studying of maternity nursing
course, added to half of them had negative attitude.
Recommendations
:
Increase awareness of the community about role
of male in nursing especially private Hospital. In addition,
educational strategies should be adopted
to overcome the unique
obstacles in maternity nursing
