Workplace Spirituality as Perceived by Nurse Managers and its Relationship with Leadership Practices

Abstract


Background: Values that have long been considered spiritual ideals, such as
integrity, honesty, and humility; have been demonstrated to have an effect on
leadership success. Similarly, practices traditionally associated with spirituality as
demonstrated in daily life have also been shown to be connected to leadership
effectiveness. Aim: this study aimed to assess workplace spirituality as perceived
by nurse managers and its relationship with leadership practices Design:
correlational design was used in this study. Setting: this study was conducted at
Ain Shams University Hospitals and Institute of Psychiatry. Subjects: sample size
was 97 nurse managers included in this study. Tools of data collection: Iconsisted
of part I- Socio-demographic characteristics as, age, sex, qualifications,
hospital, and years of working in nursing career, years of experience in
management part 2- workplace spirituality scale and II- leadership practice
inventory were used for data collection. Results: approximately two thirds of nurse
managers had high workplace spirituality level: also, two thirds of nurse managers
have good level of leadership practices. Conclusion: there were statistically
significant positive correlation between leadership practices dimensions and
workplace spirituality dimensions among nurse managers. Recommendations: top
management must communicate the vision to nurse managers in a way that is
consistent with the vision and providing training programs for newly hired nurse
managers to facilitate their induction and enhancing their leadership practices.
