Abstract

In today’s world, critical thinking and problem solving are among the primary essential skills that need to be held by individuals. In this regard, one of the most important functions of educational setting is to provide students with critical thinking and problem solving skills. In this sense, assessing critical thinking and problem solving skills of nursing students is important in nursing education. The aim of the current study was to assess critical thinking dispositions and problem solving abilities among nursing students and identify the relationship between them. Study design: A descriptive correlational design was used. Setting: This study was carried out in the Faculty of Nursing, Ain Shams University. Subject: A stratified proportional random sample consisting of 230 nursing students enrolled in the previ¬ously mentioned setting. Tools: The tools of data collection included three tools namely; Characteristic Assessment Sheet, California Critical Thinking Dispositions Inventory (CCTDI) and the Problem Solving Inventory (PSI). Results: The mean age of studied nursing students is 19.4 ± 0.99 years and the majority of them are females. More than half of studied nursing students are ambivalently disposed in their total critical thinking dispositions and less than three quarters of them perceive themselves as effective problem solvers. Additionally, there are statistically significant differenc¬es between the age and grade of studied nursing students and their total critical thinking dispositions as well as their total problem solving abilities. Moreover, there is a relationship between critical thinking dispositions of the studied nursing students and their problem solving abilities. Conclusion: The studied nursing students have variable levels of critical thinking dispositions as well as problem solving abilities. Additionally, levels of critical thinking dispositions and problem solving abilities of studied nursing students are varied by their age and grade, while they are not varied by their gender and pre-university qualification. Also, there is a significantly negative correlation between the total critical thinking disposi¬tions of studied nursing students and their total problem solving abilities. Recommendations: Educational settings should carry out activities/practices aimed at enhancing the critical thinking skills and the problem solving abilities among nursing students.
