THE ROLE OF HDL-CHOLESTEROL lN BREAST CANCER. A CASE CONTROL STUDY

Amany Mukhtar Abd EI-Hafez Mohamed;

Abstract

This study was carried out to evaluate the level of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL- cholesterol) in breast cancer patients and to study the relation between the different stages of breast cancer and HDL-cholesterollevels. A case control study was conducted with 2 control groups (patients group and normal healthy people group) compared with newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. Serum HDL-cholesterol and total cholesterol were estimated in both cases and control groups.
In multivariate conditional logistic regression analysis, the odds ratio for women in the highest quartile of serum cholesterol compared with women in the lowest quartile was
8.2 (95% confidence interval = 3.0-22.8) when cases and community controls were compared, however, this association disappeared when cases,and hospital controls were compared. On the otherhand, the odds ratio for women in the third quartile of HDL-cholesterol compared with women in the first quartile was 0.1 (95% confidence interval= 0.04-0.3), when cases and hospital controls were compared, however, this association disappeared when cases and community controls were compared.
