OPTIMAL RELIABILITY OF REDUNDANT SYSTEMS

Samir Hosny Nabih;

Abstract

The main purpose of this thesis is to maximize the profit and reliability of redundant systems.
This dissertation highlights the role of operations research on the study of the mean- system profit and system reliability. It presents, also, a brief survey of the current state of topics in reliability theory related to the work done in this thesis. Moreover, it points out the connection with the corresponding problems which have been studied by earlier authors.
The thesis deals with the array systems such as: Series - Parallel and Parallel - Series. The thesis deals also with the common form of redundant system, k - out - of - n: F systems, since many critical systems cannot achieve their intended profit (reliability) without using redundancy.
The thesis calculates the optimal number of subsystems that maximizes the profit (reliability) of the array systems. The thesis also calculates the optimal system size (n) and the optimal threshold value of (k) that maximizes the profit of the k - out - of - n: F systems. The thesis also discusses the reliability of a special case of the k- out - of- n: F systems, called the majority systems.
