IMMUNO EXPRESSION OF P21 PROTEIN IN OVARIAN SURFACE EPITHELIAL TUMORS

Naglaa Samir Ahmed;

Abstract

Surface epithelial tumors of the ovary account for 60 % of all ovarian neoplasms and in its malignant form for 80-90% of primary ovarian malignancies.

P21NVAF1 is one of the inhibitors of the phosphorylation of the cyclin dependent kinase complex. It inhibits the growth of human tumor cell lines, inhibits DNA replication and blocks cell cycle progression.

P21 is important in the maintenance of growth arrest in terminally differentiated cells. The analysis of P21 in human malignancies is therefore important for investigating the possible
role of P21 protein itself in the biological behaviour of these neoplasms.

This work aims at evaluating the possible role of P21 expression in epithelial ovarian tumors and its relation to the histopathological parameters.

The material of this study included 50 cases of surface epithelial stromal ovarian tumors. All cases were obtained from the Early Cancer Detection Unit, Gynecology and Obstetrics Department, Ain Shams University during the year 1999.

Microscopic sections were prepared and stained by : (1) Hematoxylin and eosin.
(2) lmmunoperoxidase technique for P21.

The examined cases were divided into 3 groups:
Group I : included 19 cases of benign ovarian neoplasms (38%). Group II : included 7 cases of atypically proliferating tumors
(14 %).
