THE DIFFERENTIAL EFFECT•OF MANAGEMENT COMPONENTS AMONG CLASSIC PIU PATIENTS

Abstract


he present study included 17 patients diagnosed to have classical PKU. They were under regular follow up at Medical Genetiscs Center, Ain Shams University (ASUMGC), during the period of study from March 2000 to November 2000.

They were 9 females (52.94%) and 8 males (47.06%). Their ages ranged between 3-15 years with a mean age of
8.9±3.65 years.

They were classified into 2 groups: Group I (PKU patients with strict dietary control): it enrolled 6 patients, their ages ranged between (3.40-12.00) with a mean age (6.98±2.94), and group II (PKU patients without strict dietary control): it enrolled 11 patients, their ages ranged between 3-15 years with a mean age (10.00 ±3.66).

Full medical history, thorough clinical examination, psychometric evaluation, family pedigree construction, photorecording, EEG monitoring and biochemical testing (FeC13 and TLC for monitoring ofPhe levels) were done for all patients included in the study.

The mean age at time of presentation was significant l y higher in patients belonging to group II (4.29±1.90 years) when compared to group I (1.29 ± 1.13 - years) P < 0.01.

There was insignificant statistical difference between studied groups as regards sex distribution, P > 0.05.

The most common encountered complaints on our studied groups were delayed mental and motor milestones
