RECENT ADVZNCES IN THE DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

Mohamed Ahmed Mahamed Amer;

Abstract

The term of erectile dysfunction defines the inability to achieve and maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance.

The better understanding of the functional anatomy of the penis and the physiology of penile erection have improved the diagnosis and treatment of erectile dysfunction.

Four crucial physiologic requirements should exist to obtain a satisfactory penile erection: intact neuronal innervation, intact arterial supply, appropriately responsive corporal smooth muscles, and intact venous mechanisms.

Erectile dysfunction affects millions of men throughout the world, and although it does not affect life expectancy it can have a strong negative effect on well-being and quality oflife.

Erectile dysfunction may be psychogenic, organic or mixed. Previously, psychogenic erectile dysfunction was believed to be the most common type. Recently, it has been suggested that organic factors can be identified in about 50% of the patients with erectile disorders.

Organic erectile dysfunction may be neurogemc, arteriogenic, venogenic, endocrinologic, drug induced, or associated with aging, systemic disease, and local penile diseases.
