Abstract

Bacterial vaginosis is the most common cause of abnormal vaginal discharge in childbearing period. (Bartleson-NR, 1992).

All studies proved that bacterial vaginosis is responsible for pelvic inflammatory diseases, premature rupture of membranes, preterm delivery, and a predisposing factor for the epithelial changes in the cervix as CIN. (Hillier & Holmes, 1990), (Hay et a!., 1992), and (Thomason eta!., 1990).

In 1990, 1l10mason and his colleges stated that bacterial vaginosis caused by the over growth of aerobic and anaerobic pathogenic organisms with the decrease or absence of normal bacterial vaginal nora.

In 1999, Ralph and his colleges suggested that bacterial vaginosis causes endometritis which affects the implantation, and early embryonic development.

In 1983, Amsel and his colleges stated that there are four criteria to diagnose bacterial vaginosis, they are;

1- presence of discharge.

2- pH>4.5.

3- presence of clue cells.

4- fishy odor on alkalization of vaginal fluid with 10%
potassium hydroxide.

They also considered the presence of three criteria is diagnostic for bacterial vaginosis.
