Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Inner Ear

Abstract
Advances in MR imaging continue to Improve the ability to evaluate mner ear anatomy and disease. Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is the chief symptom of inner ear lesions. Full history, clinical examination, audiometry and auditory brain stem response (ABR) can help to decide whether the sensori-neural hearing (SNH) deficit is cochlear i.e. end organ in type or retrococh.lear from lesions of the cranial nerves or their central connections.
Much of the acoustic pathway is retrocochlear and best evaluated by MRl. The cochlear type of deafness is best assessed by CT scan as it is t he procedure of choice for fine detail imaging of bone structures, however, some cochlear lesions as labyrinthitis are only seen with r& techniques.
Our study was perfonned on 73 patients (45 males and 28 females), their age ranged from 2-72 years. Twelve out of the 73 cases showed normal MRI study of the inner ear, 4 of which were clinically diagnosed as Menieres diseases and the hearing loss in the other 8 cases was attributed to damage of the hearing apparatus secondary to tschaemia or ototoxic drugs.
The remaining 61 cases were classified into 4 main groups according to the pathological findings on MRl.
Group (/): (Congenital lesions), including 11 cases. Mondini deformity was detected in 8 cases and vascular loop syndrome in the other 3 cases.
