Abstract


Bronchoscopy is currently the most commonly employed invasive procedure in the practice of pulmonary medicine. Both rigid and flexible bronchoscopes are used to treat as well as diagnose various pulmonary disorders such as: pulmonary involvement by neoplasms, infection, diffuse lung diseases and air-way problems.

Hypoxemia has been shown occur during flexible bronchoscopy in several studies, a fall in arterial oxygen tension of about 18 mmHg during the procedure is common.

This study included sixty patients with a variety of indications for diagnostic bronchoscopy. They were 44 males with the percentage of 73.3% with mean age of
51.2+5.2 years (range 19-75 years) and 16 females with the
percentage of 26.7% with a mean age of 42.6+6.2 years
(range 18-65 years).


All patients were subjected to full history taking, clinical examination, spirometric lung function tests, arterial blood gases analysis, chest x-ray and CT chest if indicated. During bronchoscopy 02 saturation was monitored just before and continuously althrough the procedure. after bronchoscopy all patients were assessed again Y2 an hour by arterial blood gas analysis and then one day after by another arterial blood gases sample and
