LONG-TERM FOLLOW UP OF SIGMA RECTUM POUCH IN THE MANAGEMENT OF INFILTRATING BLADDER CARCINOMA

Abstract


Sigma rectal pouch (Mainz II pouch) was used for

anal controlled continent urinary diversion following radical cystectomy at Ain-Shams University Hospital and Aswan Educational Hospital.

Fifty patients with radical cystectomy for bladder cancer were studied between 1999 and 2001. The age of the patients was ranging from 25 years to 68 years. The mean follow-up was 18 months (6-24). Most of the patients were male (66%).

Pre-operative assessment was done to all patients. Serum creatinine was less than 2 mg/dl. Liver function tests and electrolytes were normal.

Pre-operative evaluation of upper urinary tract was done using IVU and was confirmed by sonography and CT scanning.

Pre-operative cystoscopy and tumor biopsy were done and DRE examination under general anesthesia was done also.

The follow-up scheme was monthly at the first 3 months at outpatient clinic. In every visit, laboratory investigations and sonography were done. Then, following
the patients at the 6t\ 1i11 and 24 months.
