PHYSICS, APPLICATIONS AND USES OF OZONE IN GENERAL SURGERY

HANNA HABIB HANNA;

Abstract

Ozone is triatomic oxygen (03). It is an extremely potent oxidant. Ozone is created by solar radiation, lightening, and reaction of hydroca, boils and nitrous oxides in the presence of sunlight.
CFCs damage the protective ozone layer. Ozone depletion will increase the amount of UVB, which will increase the risk of health effects.
Medical ozone is a mixture of ozone and oxygen prepared from the purest oxygen via silent electric discharge.
TECHNICAL APPROACHES:
a) Prerequirements for medical ozone:
1. Ozone concentration range from 1 to 100 Jlg/ml.
2. Pure oxygen as initial substance.
3. Ozone free surroundings.
4. Physiologically faultless materials.
5. Mobile or portable equipment.
b) Principles of an ozone generator:
Medical ozone flows through high voltage tubes connected in series of approximately 4000 - 14000 volts.
